Homeland Security Audit Flags 'Critical' Linux Bug

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has found a security vulnerability in X11, the windowing system used on most UNIX and Linux systems. Local users could exploit this vulnerability to give themselves root access to an affected system.

- The problem, Jargonfly, is that so many people don't. You can't even tell someone to be quiet anymore. The woman the linked article talks about sounds unreasonable, even the police tried to dissuade her from filing a complaint. I highly doubt that her case will succeed.

- I'm often connecting to backpack through insecure wireless networks and the ssh tunnel takes care of all of the security, whether https or http. Sure, it would be nice if 37signals made ssl available to everyone, but you can get the same functionality for free by just being a little bit clever.

- I agree completely. I like what 37signals is doing, but the lack of SSL on the lower-tiered plans has troubled me for some time.

- The problem with public-key cryptography is that you need a way to verify the identity of the person you're exchanging mail from. From my experience, this is where almost all of the complexity comes from.

- Proof of concept code is available here thanks to Michael Lehn. It looks like it's pretty easy to hide the nature of the script as it shows up as a QuickTime movie in the finder, so even if you have auto-execute disabled in Safari you could still get tricked into running it.
